Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 Suffers Runway Overrun and Tail Strike in Munich, Forced into Emergency Landing. A Vietnam Airlines long-haul flight bound for Hanoi was forced to execute a tense emergency landing at Munich Airport (MUC) after suffering a late rotation, runway overrun, and severe tail strike during departure.

The incident involved Flight VN34, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying 271 passengers and 16 crew members. Despite substantial physical damage to the tail section and main landing gear tires, all 287 people on board landed safely without injuries.

Sequence of Events: Late Rotation and Runway Excursion

On the evening of Saturday, August 15, Flight VN34 was cleared for takeoff on Runway 26R at Munich Airport, heading to Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport.
According to preliminary flight data and eyewitness footage:
  • Unusually Long Takeoff Roll: The heavily fueled wide-body aircraft failed to lift off before reaching the end of the paved runway surface.
  • Runway Overrun & Dust Cloud: The Boeing 787’s landing gear entered the paved overrun area beyond the runway boundary at high speed, kicking up a massive cloud of dust, grass, and debris while striking runway edge lighting.
  • Tail Strike: As the pilots initiated an aggressive late rotation to get airborne, the rear section of the fuselage scraped hard against the ground, causing severe structural tail drag.

Two-Hour Fuel Dump and Low-Pass Inspection

Shortly after getting airborne, the flight crew reported tire pressure warnings and technical anomalies. Recognizing the potential damage, the pilots halted their climb at approximately 9,000 feet and entered a holding pattern over southern Germany.
For over two hours, the aircraft circled to burn and dump fuel, reducing its gross weight to allow for a safe landing attempt. Before touching down, the crew performed low-altitude flybys over the Munich airfield, allowing airport ground teams and emergency crews to visually inspect the damaged landing gear and tail section.

Emergency Landing and Runway Closure

Emergency firefighting vehicles lined the runway as the aircraft touched down. Visual reports indicated smoke trailing from the left main landing gear as the damaged tires blew out during rollout.
Unable to taxi under its own power due to shattered wheel assemblies, the Boeing 787 came to a halt on the runway and required towing to the gate. The incident caused temporary flight diversions and a brief closure of Munich Airport’s northern runway while crews cleared debris.

Investigation Underway

Vietnam Airlines confirmed the flight returned due to “technical issues” and affirmed that all passengers and crew were safely accommodated in Munich. Both the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) and Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAV) have launched formal investigations to examine takeoff weight calculations, trim settings, and weather conditions during departure.
