Cristiano Ronaldo has been given a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for walking out of the national team camp during the UEFA Nations League.
The 41-year-old forward has also been fined 255 euros. It is the minimum penalty under federation rules, which allow suspensions of one to six months for leaving the national team.
Why Cristiano Ronaldo Was Suspended
Ronaldo left the camp on September 30. He had been asked to warm up as a substitute against Norway on September 27 but was not brought on, and then learned he would not start against Denmark on October 1. He later accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word over game time, while insisting he was not retiring from international football.
On October 6, he apologised to fans and said he would accept any punishment. The FPF disciplinary committee said it took his remorse into account.
Ban Almost Served
The suspension is backdated to the Denmark match, so Ronaldo has already served 19 days and will be free by the end of October. Portugal’s remaining Nations League games are against Denmark at home on November 14 and Wales away on November 17.
Portugal won all four Nations League matches without him and have already reached the quarter-finals. Jesus has said he will pick Ronaldo if he is playing for Al Nassr and wants to be called up. Portugal’s all-time top scorer responded on social media with a training photo captioned “Putting in the work.”
