Pakistan, Qatar, Turkiye and Indonesia have signed the Badr Defence Pact, a multilateral agreement to boost cooperation in defence production and military capabilities, Turkiye’s defence ministry said on Wednesday.
The Badr Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Qatar, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif signing on behalf of Pakistan. Pakistan’s Foreign Office has not yet commented on the agreement.
What the Badr Defence Pact Covers
- Cooperation in military production
- Strengthening defensive capabilities
- Technical military training
- Joint research and development
- Meeting the defence needs of allied and friendly nations
Turkiye’s defence ministry said the agreement holds substantial economic importance and will use each country’s military production strengths to build joint defence industrial capacity.
Who Signed the Agreement
Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman, and Indonesia’s Deputy Defence Minister Yusuf Jauhari signed alongside Khawaja Asif. Haluk Gorgun, head of Turkiye’s Secretariat of Defence Industries, said the pact lays the foundation for joint production and technology development, going beyond simple off-the-shelf purchases.
Pakistan’s Growing Defence Ties
Pakistan and Turkiye are already members of the Makkah Defence Alliance with Saudi Arabia, and part of the Regional Four group with Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Pakistan and Qatar have also been mediators in the US-Iran war. Earlier this week, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met his Qatari counterpart in Doha, while Indonesia’s naval chief met Field Marshal Asim Munir in Rawalpindi last month.
