Hussain was charged by Islamabad police last year with sedition and terrorism for his alleged involvement in the violence and vandalism that occurred during protests following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan.

“Retired Lieutenant Colonel Akbar Hussain was convicted and sentenced through Field General Court Martial (FGCM) under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952 for inciting sedition among army personnel,” a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said today.

The statement added that a court of competent jurisdiction found Hussain “guilty” of the offense and sentenced him to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment on May 10.

“As a result of the sentence, the officer’s rank was forfeited on July 26, 2024,” the ISPR said.

An examination of his social media activity on platform X revealed content critical of the military and its current leadership while being supportive of PTI.

The ISPR also mentioned the convictions of Major (retired) Adil Farooq Raja and Captain (retired) Haider Raza Mehdi, stating that both were convicted under the FGCM for “inciting sedition among army personnel.”

“The court of competent jurisdiction convicted Adil Farooq Raja and Haider Raza Mehdi on October 7 and 9, 2023, respectively, following due judicial process, and sentenced them to 14 and 12 years of rigorous imprisonment, respectively, along with forfeiture of their ranks effective November 21, 2023,” it said.
