The PTA chairman informed the committee that out of the total LDI companies, five have expressed their willingness to pay the required fees for license renewal. However, several others have challenged the renewal process in the courts. The chairman emphasized that the licenses of these companies were set to expire in July and August of this year, highlighting the urgency of the matter.

The committee members raised concerns about the delay in the renewal process and the legal battles involving these companies. Senator Anusha Rahman questioned whether all 15 LDI companies actually possess the necessary optical fiber infrastructure to provide quality services. She pointed out that only four of these companies seemed to be actively involved in the market.

The PTA chairman responded by stating that the authority had proposed a flexible payment plan to ease the financial burden on the companies. However, the former IT secretary had issued a policy directive that went beyond his authority, complicating the matter. The issue was eventually brought before the cabinet for deliberation.

The committee members expressed their dissatisfaction with the slow pace of resolution and urged the PTA to expedite the process. They stressed the importance of a level playing field for all telecom operators and the need to ensure that consumers continue to receive uninterrupted services.

As the hearing concluded, it became evident that the renewal of LDI licenses remains a complex and contentious issue. The PTA will need to find a way to balance the interests of the government, the telecom companies, and the consumers while ensuring that the country’s digital infrastructure is strengthened.
