Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Tuesday with a delegation of officials, Iranian state television reported, in the Asim Munir Tehran visit that comes as Pakistan tries to revive stalled diplomacy between the United States and Iran.
It is the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff’s fifth visit to Iran since June, when Pakistan helped broker a short-lived memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran. Iran insists that the understanding should remain the basis for any peace deal.
What Iran said about the Asim Munir Tehran visit
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed the visit at his weekly press briefing. He said the talks would touch on the negotiations but would be “mainly focused on bilateral relations and strengthening interactions and cooperation.”
Baqaei also said Iran could not rule out a return to fighting. “We live with this possibility day and night,” he said.
Strait of Hormuz at the centre
Diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran have stalled, with the future of the Strait of Hormuz a key point of dispute. Earlier talks between Pakistan’s army chief and Iranian leaders focused on preventing further escalation and reopening the strait.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was also in Tehran on Monday, a day before the Pakistani delegation arrived.
Naqvi: Pakistan made every effort for peace
Speaking at the Global Security Forum 2026 in Doha on Monday, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said Pakistan had made “every possible effort” to ease tensions between Iran and the US and bring both sides to the negotiating table.
He credited Field Marshal Asim Munir with opening doors to dialogue through his ties with world leaders, and said lasting peace needs patience, trust and sustained effort rather than a single meeting.
