Pakistan has stopped issuing machine-readable passports from October 15, and new applicants now receive only e-passports under a decision by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports.
The change applies at passport offices across the country as well as at Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad. The Consulate General of Pakistan in New York announced the switch in a public notice last month.
What happens to existing machine-readable passports
Machine-readable passports that have already been issued remain valid until their expiry dates. Holders will need to apply for an e-passport when their current passport runs out.
What the e-passport offers
The e-passport carries an electronic chip that stores the holder’s passport and identity details, allowing compatible immigration systems to verify travellers electronically.
Applicants are advised to check the latest fee and processing details with the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports or their nearest passport office before applying.
