A tragic incident stunned the federal capital on Thursday when Superintendent of Police (SP) Adeel Akbar, serving in Islamabad’s Industrial Area Division, allegedly shot himself while on duty near the Serena Hotel checkpoint.

According to police sources, SP Akbar sustained critical gunshot injuries and was immediately rushed to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) by fellow officers. Despite the best efforts of doctors, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The incident occurred within a high-security zone, sending shockwaves across the Islamabad Police ranks. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a single gunshot before officers found SP Akbar critically injured at the scene. His body has been shifted for medico-legal formalities, while senior officials, including the Inspector General (IG) Islamabad, have taken notice of the matter.
In a brief statement, an Islamabad Police spokesperson confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway. “Evidence has been collected from the scene, and all aspects of the incident are being examined. The facts will be shared once the inquiry is complete,” the spokesperson said.
Authorities have not yet ruled out whether the shooting was accidental or linked to personal or professional stress.
Who Was SP Adeel Akbar?:
Mr. Adeel Akbar, an officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), had recently joined the Islamabad Capital Territory Police as Superintendent of Police (Industrial Area Division).
He held an MPhil in Governance and Public Policy from the National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad, and began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Over the years, he served with distinction in multiple districts across Balochistan, where he commanded several key police units.
SP Akbar was known among peers as a disciplined, professional, and humble officer, highly regarded for his leadership and dedication to public service. His professional expertise spanned security management, counter-terrorism, community policing, human rights protection, and crisis management.
The sudden loss of such a respected officer has left the Islamabad Police community in deep mourning, with colleagues and subordinates describing it as a “devastating blow” to the force.
