A Tamil-language film, “Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food,” depicting a Hindu Brahmin woman’s culinary aspirations, has been removed from Netflix just days after its release. The removal follows accusations from some Hindu groups of offending religious sentiments.

The film stars Nayanthara as Annapoorani, who defies her family’s strict vegetarian beliefs to pursue her passion for cooking, which includes learning to prepare meat dishes. This portrayal clashed with traditional norms of the Brahmin community, sparking objections from hard-line Hindu organizations.
Specific points of contention included scenes where Annapoorani offers Muslim prayers before cooking and a Muslim character mentioning the Hindu god Ram’s fondness for meat. These references, considered disrespectful by some viewers, ignited the controversy.
“Annapoorani’s” journey faced further hurdles with a police case filed against Nayanthara and others in Madhya Pradesh, and widespread social media criticism. This incident adds to a worrying trend in India, where accusations of religious and cultural insensitivity have targeted several films and shows in recent years.
Despite the controversy, “Annapoorani” received mixed reviews for its portrayal of a woman breaking free from societal constraints. However, its depiction of diverse culinary practices and religious references proved too sensitive for certain sections of the audience.
While supporters of the removal celebrate the film’s withdrawal, others raise concerns about free expression and artistic freedom. Actor Parvathy Thiruvothu highlighted the dangers of setting a precedent where artistic expression succumbs to pressure groups.
Netflix confirmed the film’s removal at the “licensor’s request,” leaving the producers’ official stance and Zee Entertainment’s response unclear. The film’s future release remains uncertain, hanging in the balance between creative expression and religious sensitivities.
