Frustrating Experience with Jazz: Bureaucracy Beyond Government

Date:

A frustrating encounter with Jazz – Pakistan Mobile Communications Limited has highlighted how bureaucratic red-tapism isn’t exclusive to government institutions. Mustafa Tariq Wynne shared his ordeal of trying to reissue a stolen SIM card, registered under his late father’s name, which he had used for over 8 years.

To transfer the SIM, Wynne was required to provide a list of documents including a NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC), his father’s death certificate, a copy of the FIR, and a stamp paper stating his relationship to his father. Despite complying, Wynne faced objections at every step.

Initially, Jazz refused the CDA-issued death certificate Wynne provided, demanding one from the Union Council. Wynne explained that Islamabad hasn’t had a local government since 2021, and CDA is the authority responsible for issuing such certificates.

After prolonged discussions, a Jazz employee finally acknowledged the legitimacy of his documents and escalated the case to higher management, requesting Wynne to send the certificate via WhatsApp. However, the process remains slow and tedious, with the SIM reissue taking at least three days and additional hours for activation.

Wynne expressed frustration over the entire experience, pointing out the stark contrast to Pakistan’s supposed digital transformation. “So much for Digital Pakistan,” he said.
