The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication has once again lashed out at Jazz for its alleged Rs 6.58 billion overbilling scandal, terming it one of the most blatant examples of corporate exploitation and regulatory failure in Pakistan’s telecom sector.

During a heated session, the Auditor General’s officials told the committee that Jazz had failed to provide verifiable records regarding tariff approvals. “The approval record for these inflated tariffs is missing. PTA’s clearance was never shared with us,” officials confirmed.

Senator Anusha Rahman grilled both Jazz and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), questioning how such massive overcharging could take place without regulatory oversight. “Is this tariff even regulated? PTA’s negligence is not just damaging the public but also tarnishing the reputation of the entire private sector,” she said bluntly.

The committee expressed deep anger that despite repeated queries, PTA continues to hide behind outdated records, refusing to provide updated approvals. This has only strengthened suspicions that both Jazz and PTA are complicit in keeping the Rs 6.58 billion overbilling under wraps.

Parliamentarians demanded to know why the audit report had not been made public earlier, warning that silence and concealment are fuelling mistrust. “When will the people see this report? Why is PTA shielding Jazz instead of protecting consumers?” asked Anusha Rahman.

The committee directed PTA to present complete tariff approval records in the next session, warning that continued evasion will not be tolerated.

This is not the first time Jazz has been under fire. Previous investigations — including revelations by the Auditor General — have repeatedly pointed towards corporate looting, manipulation of tariffs, and PTA’s complicity. The Senate’s fresh outrage has now reignited calls for accountability, with lawmakers vowing not to let Jazz “get away with daylight robbery.”

With billions at stake and consumer trust on the line, the Senate’s stance marks a significant blow to Jazz, which is increasingly being seen not as Pakistan’s largest telecom operator, but as its most controversial.
