The NAB threshold for corruption cases should be cut to Rs50 million from the current Rs500m, National Accountability Bureau Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed Butt said on Wednesday, arguing that the higher limit leaves a large share of graft outside the bureau’s reach.
Under the present law, NAB can only take up cases involving Rs500m or more. The chairman said a lower limit would let the bureau act against a wider range of corruption cases.
Why NAB wants a lower threshold
Butt said a Rs50m NAB threshold would bring many more cases within the bureau’s reach.
Any change to the limit needs an amendment to the accountability law passed by Parliament.
Record recoveries claimed
The bureau said it recovered Rs9.18 trillion in the third quarter of the year. Total recoveries since 2023 stand at Rs11.524tr, according to the bureau.
NAB also said it had recovered 235,622 kanals of Pakistan Railways land worth about Rs6.78tr from illegal occupation.
Rs908m was returned to 4,280 people who had lost money in housing and investment frauds.
Next targets
The chairman said the bureau’s next focus areas are the power sector, the Evacuee Trust Property Board, state-owned enterprises and the mines and minerals sector.
