A serious PHP vulnerability discovered with the help of artificial intelligence has forced several websites offline as administrators rushed to protect their servers, raising fresh concern about AI being used to find software flaws.
PHP is the programming language behind roughly 70 per cent of websites, including those built on WordPress. A fix was released on Wednesday.
How the PHP vulnerability was found
Security researchers at Wiz Research and Calif used AI tools to find the flaws. OpenAI described them as one of the most impactful vulnerabilities found so far with AI help.
Experts say the case shows how AI can speed up both defence and attack, since the same tools could help hackers find weak points faster.
Sites taken offline
The Paris police website and a Dutch government website were among those taken offline as a precaution. Researchers said there was no sign yet of active attacks using the flaws.
What website owners should do
Site owners and hosting companies are advised to update PHP to the patched version as soon as possible. Those running WordPress should check with their host that the update has been applied and keep plugins and themes up to date.
