South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder has sent ripples through the cricketing world, carving his name into the record books with an astonishing unbeaten 264 on his Test captaincy debut against Zimbabwe. His monumental effort propelled South Africa to a dominant 465/4 at stumps on Day 1 of the second Test at Queens Sports Club.

Mulder, stepping in as stand-in captain due to injuries to regular skipper Temba Bavuma and vice-captain Keshav Maharaj, delivered a performance that defied his relative inexperience in the leadership role. His innings marks the highest score ever by a player in their first Test innings as captain, surpassing the long-standing record of 239 set by New Zealand’s Graham Dowling in 1968.

The 27-year-old’s innings was a masterclass of control and aggression. After South Africa found themselves in a tricky position at 24/2 early in the day, Mulder, batting at number three, combined with David Bedingham (82) for a crucial 184-run partnership. He then formed another massive stand of 217 with the young Lhuan-dré Pretorius (78), who also impressed after his century on debut in the first Test.

Mulder’s record-breaking knock included 34 fours and three sixes, showcasing his ability to find boundaries with ease. He reached his century off just 118 balls and his double century in 214 deliveries, the second-fastest by a South African in Test cricket. His score of 264 not out is also the highest by a South African in a single day of Test cricket.

This incredible feat comes on the heels of another century (147) in the first Test against Zimbabwe, highlighting Mulder’s burgeoning form with the bat. Originally more recognized for his bowling prowess, a finger injury last year led to his promotion up the batting order, a move that is now paying rich dividends for the Proteas.

Mulder’s historic achievement not only puts South Africa in a commanding position in the second Test but also signals his emergence as a key figure in the Proteas’ Test setup, even amidst a period of considerable captaincy changes for the team. Cricket fans are eager to see if he can convert his overnight score into an even bigger one on Day 2.
