The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has ordered KP school safety inspections of every government school building in the province, following the deadly roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar.
In a letter issued on October 15, the Elementary and Secondary Education Department asked the Communication and Works (C&W) Department to form technical teams to inspect all government schools, including boys’ and girls’ institutions, in coordination with district education officers.
What the KP school safety inspections will check
The teams will examine roofs, ceilings, walls, beams, foundations, staircases and other structural parts of each building. Every school will be placed in one of three categories: safe, in need of repairs, or potentially unsafe and requiring urgent technical assessment.
Inspectors must also recommend repairs and timelines, and may suggest closing or restricting access to any building that poses an immediate threat.
District-wise reports are due by noon on October 26. The C&W Department will then issue a building safety clearance certificate for each school, stating whether it is fit for continued use.
Action after Peshawar tragedy
The order comes after a classroom roof collapsed at a three-storey private school in Peshawar’s Dir Colony, killing at least 34 students and a teacher and injuring several others.
Authorities have been told not to wait for the full survey before acting on buildings that pose an immediate risk to students and staff.
Parents are also urged to report visible cracks, leaks or damaged structures at their children’s schools to education officials.
