Samsung’s current display tech features phosphorescent green and red sub-pixels, while blue diodes use fluorescent tech, technically excluding them from the PHOLED category. The proposed phosphorescent diodes promise 100% internal luminous efficiency, a notable upgrade from the 25% limitation of blue fluorescent counterparts.

The potential enhancement in power efficiency is significant, but a major drawback is the shorter lifespan of about 55% compared to fluorescent blue diodes. This limitation raises doubts about Samsung’s ability to integrate the technology into commercial products by 2025.

Despite challenges, Samsung is committed to R&D, aiming to be the first to mass-produce PHOLED panels. However, competitors like BOE and LG have time to develop their technologies before 2025, potentially challenging Samsung’s market advantage. The race to innovate in display technology is intensifying, and the coming years will reveal the impact of these developments on the market.
