Sometimes the strangest fortunes in crypto are built on nothing more than a joke that got out of hand. This week’s story is one for the books.
It started with a genuine business dispute. Robinhood, the popular US trading app, rolled out a new tokenized-stock feature that lets users trade blockchain-based versions of real company shares. AMC Entertainment’s outspoken CEO, Adam Aron, publicly objected to his company’s stock being tokenized this way, calling the arrangement inappropriate.

Crypto communities, never ones to let a good punchline go to waste, took Aron’s complaint and ran with it. Within hours, a brand-new token calling itself MEME appeared on Robinhood’s own blockchain network – its entire premise being a wink at AMC’s ticker and the phrase “A Meme Coin.” There was no company behind it, no roadmap, no whitepaper. Just a joke wrapped in a smart contract.
Then the joke went viral. MEME’s price exploded by more than 3,100% in a single day, pushing its total market value above $60 million before most traders even understood what they were buying.
One 21-day-old crypto wallet caught the wave early. According to blockchain analytics, its owner spent roughly $2,972 to buy 16.11 million MEME tokens. Within twelve hours, that stake was worth more than $2.1 million – a return of about 713 times the original bet. The trader had already banked $85,300 in real profit by selling a portion of the tokens, while the rest of the holding sat as an eye-watering $2.03 million paper gain.
It’s the kind of story that makes headlines precisely because it almost never happens. Meme coins like MEME are built on pure hype rather than any underlying product or business, and their charts tend to move in both directions with equal violence. For every trader who turns a few thousand dollars into a fortune overnight, many more buy in after the spike and watch their money disappear just as fast.
Still, stories like this are a reminder of just how unpredictable – and occasionally very funny – the crypto market can be. A CEO’s complaint, a community’s inside joke, and twelve hours later, someone’s bank account looks very different.
