PTA Blocks 111 Unlicensed Loan Apps in Collaboration with SECP

Date:

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has undertaken significant measures in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) to address concerns related to loan lending platforms. According to official documents from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the SECP oversees loan lending applications and platforms through the Non-Banking Financial Companies Regulations of 2008.

PTA, acting upon recommendations from the SECP, has taken decisive actions against 120 apps and loan lending platforms, initiating the blocking process. Out of these, 111 applications have already been successfully removed from the Google Play store. The remaining apps are currently under pursuit by PTA in coordination with Google for their removal.

To streamline the regulatory process, PTA has introduced a sophisticated electronic portal, the E-portal, exclusively designed for government organizations, including Federal and Provincial Ministries, Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), and the SECP. This portal facilitates efficient communication and collaboration in addressing issues related to unauthorized loan lending applications.

Recognizing the potential risks posed by unlicensed loan lending apps, PTA has issued warnings to the general public through various social media platforms, urging them to refrain from downloading fraudulent applications that lack SECP authorization.

In an effort to enhance public awareness, PTA and SECP have joined forces to design and implement awareness campaigns focused on illegal apps. A designated focal person from PTA has been nominated to engage with the SECP, promoting a cohesive approach in addressing the challenges posed by unauthorized loan lending platforms. This collaborative effort signifies a commitment to creating a robust mechanism to combat the proliferation of illegal applications and protect the interests of the public.
