Pakistan is rapidly approaching the commercial launch of 5G mobile services, with nearly 80% of smartphones in the country already capable of supporting 5G technology, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) sources. The announcement comes as preparations intensify for the nation’s first-ever 5G spectrum auction, currently expected before the end of February 2026.

Strong Device Readiness Across Pakistan
According to regulatory and industry insiders, the vast majority of smartphones used in Pakistan already support the 2300 MHz and 2600 MHz frequency bands necessary for next-generation 5G services. This means most users will not need to upgrade their handsets to access 5G once it’s commercially launched.
Spectrum Auction: A Major Milestone
The PTA’s Information Memorandum (IM) for the 5G spectrum auction was issued earlier this month, outlining the auction rules, spectrum blocks (including the 700, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2600, and 3500 MHz bands), and eligibility requirements for bidders. Once finalised, the auction is expected to usher in a new era of high-speed mobile broadband in Pakistan.
Industry experts say releasing new mid-band spectrum will not only support 5G — it can also boost existing 4G speeds from an average of ~4 Mbps to ~20–25 Mbps in congested urban areas.
Delay in Policy Directive Raises Concerns
Despite strong preparation on the device side, the 5G rollout faces bureaucratic delays. Reports reveal that although the federal cabinet approved 5G policy documents in late December 2025, the formal directive has not yet been issued to the PTA. Until this official summary reaches the regulator, PTA cannot issue the final auction details or commence the bidding process.
Experts warn that continued delays could push Pakistan’s 5G launch timeline to late 2026, potentially placing the country behind some regional peers in high-speed connectivity.
What This Means for Users and Industry
✔️ Almost 80% of phones are ready for 5G — reducing the need for consumers to buy new devices soon.
✔️ Auction expected before end of February 2026 — a pivotal step for telecom expansion.
✔️ Delays in formal policy filing may slow commercial deployment.
✔️ Operators could begin offering services 6–7 months post-auction once networks are built.
Economic and Digital Growth Impact
Telecom industry leaders believe that the 5G rollout will be a game-changer for Pakistan’s digital economy — enhancing video streaming, cloud services, remote work, smart technologies, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, telecom executives emphasise that timely government action on policy directives and auction logistics is now the biggest factor determining how fast these benefits arrive.
