PTA Clarifies: No Cut in Mobile Phone Taxes — Viral Claims Fake

Date:

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially dismissed viral social media reports claiming a massive reduction in mobile phone taxes, calling them false, misleading and unauthorised.

In an official statement, the telecom regulator made it clear that no notification, directive or policy change concerning cuts in mobile phone taxes — whether for consumers or importers — has been issued by the authority. The controversial notice circulating online has no official basis and appears designed to mislead both buyers and mobile phone importers.

PTA’s Warning Against Fake Information

The PTA has urged the public to stop sharing unverified claims and to rely only on the regulator’s official website and verified social media channels for accurate updates on rules, taxes, and telecom policy.

A spokesperson for the authority stressed that all authentic announcements related to taxation, device registrations, or import regulations are only released through official PTA platforms — and not through forwarded messages or unofficial posts.

What’s Behind the Confusion?

The rumours appear to stem from a recent revision by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), which updated customs valuation rates for fbr customs values used phones, including brands such as Apple, Samsung, Google and OnePlus. This downward revision of customs values can indirectly affect the total payable tax on certain imported used phones, as customs valuation is one component of the overall duty calculation.

However, this FBR valuation change is not a formal PTA tax cut and does not mean that mobile phone taxes for ordinary consumers have been slashed.

Public Reaction and Market Impact

Mobile phone buyers had reacted to social media posts suggesting an imminent reduction in taxes, raising hopes of cheaper prices on both new and used devices. The PTA’s clarification, however, underscores that device taxation remains unchanged for most consumers and that expectations of immediate tax relief should be tempered.

Industry analysts note that while the customs valuation revision could eventually lead to lower duties on specific used phones, any significant reduction in overall taxes will require formal regulatory updates from the government and the PTA itself — something not yet announced.
