Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Senator Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, delivered a powerful address at the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, rallying global parliaments to prioritize social justice, inclusive development, and legislative action for a fairer world.

Under the theme “Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice,” Chairman Gilani emphasized the critical role of parliaments in transforming ideals of equality, dignity, and justice into tangible realities. He commended Uzbekistan for hosting the landmark assembly and praised the IPU’s role in fostering parliamentary diplomacy and multilateral cooperation.

  1. Pakistan’s Progressive Reforms:
    • Highlighted legislative and policy measures to empower marginalized communities, enhance healthcare and education access, and strengthen labor rights.
    • Showcased successful initiatives like the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and universal healthcare policies as models for poverty alleviation.
  2. Inclusive Development for All:
    • Stressed Pakistan’s commitment to women’s empowerment, youth inclusion, and rights for informal workers and persons with disabilities.
    • Called for a New Social Contract, aligning with the UN Secretary-General’s vision, to ensure fair fiscal policies, progressive taxation, and human-centered growth.
  3. Condemnation of Global Injustices:
    • Denounced the ongoing atrocities in Palestine and Kashmir, urging the international community to break its silence and uphold justice.
    • Asserted that peace and equity must be universal, not selective.
  4. Urgent Call to Action:
    • Encouraged parliaments worldwide to collaborate across borders to redefine economic priorities and ensure development reaches the most vulnerable.
    • Emphasized the need for decisive steps ahead of the Second World Summit for Social Development later this year.

A Closing Appeal for Collective Action: Chairman Gilani concluded with a resolute message: “A just society is not built on words but on action. Let us legislate wisely and act together to build a future rooted in dignity, equity, and shared prosperity.”

Reaffirming Pakistan’s dedication to global solidarity and social justice, he urged lawmakers to translate commitments into concrete policies that uplift all citizens.
