As of early Thursday morning, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee confirmed that at least 36 people have died and a staggering 279 people are reported missing following the inferno at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in the New Territories.

The catastrophic Hong Kong fire began in the mid-afternoon and rapidly spread across multiple apartment towers in the complex. Early reports from officials suggest the blaze originated on the external bamboo and construction netting scaffolding, a traditional and highly flammable material covering the buildings for major renovation work, before engulfing the interior and adjacent blocks.

Key Details of the Crisis:

  • Location: Wang Fuk Court housing complex, Tai Po district, New Territories.

  • Casualties: 36 dead, including one firefighter, with 29 people remaining hospitalized (seven in critical condition).

  • Missing Persons: 279 residents are currently reported missing.

  • Alarm Level: Escalated to Level 5, the highest emergency rating.

  • Response: Nearly 800 firefighters and over 120 fire engines were deployed to battle the fast-moving flames, which made rescue operations extremely challenging due to high temperatures and falling debris.

  • Cause: The exact cause of the Hong Kong fire is under investigation, but initial reports point to the rapid spread across the external bamboo scaffolding.

Dozens of residents have been evacuated to temporary shelters, with officials expressing deep concern, especially for the elderly residents in the densely populated complex. Hong Kong’s leader, John Lee, has set up a dedicated task force to investigate the incident, which has already drawn condolences from China’s President Xi Jinping.

The tragedy has reignited serious concerns over the continued use of highly combustible bamboo scaffolding in Hong Kong’s dense construction environment. Authorities continue the arduous search and rescue operation in the charred tower blocks.
