UN Chief Guterres Heads to Islamabad for Iran Talks

Date:

The Guterres Pakistan visit is set to begin this week, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres travelling to Islamabad to back Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the US-Iran conflict at a time when the ceasefire between the two sides has broken down.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Guterres will leave New York for a four-day trip to Pakistan. It will be his first visit to the country since he travelled to Pakistan in solidarity with flood victims after the devastating 2022 monsoon. He steps down as UN chief at the end of this year, which makes this one of his final major diplomatic trips.

Guterres Pakistan Visit: Meetings and Agenda

During his stay in Islamabad, the UN chief is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and President Asif Ali Zardari. The main subject will be Pakistan’s role in bringing Washington and Tehran to the table and how the United Nations can support the negotiations, as reported by The Express Tribune.

The programme is not limited to the Iran file. Guterres will also visit the National Disaster Management Authority to review how flood recovery has progressed since 2022, and he will go to the headquarters of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, known as UNMOGIP, which monitors the Line of Control in Kashmir.

Pakistan’s Mediation Role in the US-Iran Conflict

Pakistan has been at the centre of efforts to calm the conflict. Its diplomacy helped produce a memorandum of understanding that set up a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. That arrangement later broke down, and Guterres has since called for fresh dialogue between the parties.

The UN spokesperson described Pakistan’s willingness to use diplomacy and mediation to bring parties together as one of its greatest contributions. Guterres has repeatedly praised Islamabad’s part in the process, and his visit is widely seen as a public show of support for that role.

The trip comes during a tense week. Iran’s foreign minister has said that only fair and just talks can end the war, while an IRGC commander has warned that US bases and warships would be vulnerable if Washington launched a ground invasion. At the same time, Pakistan’s army chief and the foreign minister were heading to Riyadh for a meeting under the Makkah defence agreement framework, a sign of how busy the country’s diplomatic calendar has become.

Why the Visit Matters for Pakistan

For Islamabad, the visit carries weight on several fronts. It gives the government a chance to present itself as a credible broker on the world stage, and it brings the UN’s attention back to long-running issues such as climate-driven floods and the situation along the Line of Control.

It also arrives while domestic politics remain unsettled, with tension between the government and the PTI dominating headlines, including talk of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Foreign dignitaries often provide the government a platform to show stability and international standing, although the political situation at home is likely to be watched closely during the visit.

On the diplomatic side, observers will be looking for any sign that the UN chief’s trip leads to a restart of formal US-Iran talks in Islamabad. A Guterres Pakistan visit cannot by itself end a conflict, but the backing of the UN Secretary-General can add legitimacy to Pakistan’s mediation and put pressure on both sides to return to the table.

Pakistan will also be hoping the visit helps keep global attention on its humanitarian and climate needs, since the 2022 floods left millions displaced and recovery has been uneven in many districts. Meetings at the disaster authority are expected to give the UN chief a first-hand look at that work.

The outcome of the meetings, including any joint statements, will be closely followed in Washington, Tehran and across the region over the coming days.
