New Designs Ready, Rs5,000 Note to Stay
SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that the new currency note designs have now been completed and submitted to the finance ministry, marking a major step in Pakistan’s ongoing currency modernization efforts. He also clarified that there is no proposal to discontinue the Rs5,000 note, dismissing rumours circulating about its removal.
The planned redesigned notes — covering all denominations from Rs10 up to Rs5,000 — are expected to feature enhanced security elements and updated visual details meant to curb counterfeiting and improve overall durability and usability, according to the governor’s briefing.
Next Steps Before Circulation
While the designs are now ready, SBP will only begin printing the new notes once the federal government grants formal approval. The release into general circulation will follow after production and logistical preparations are completed.
This development follows earlier updates that the central bank was nearing completion of the redesign work and expected to begin printing soon after approval, part of a long-term plan to modernize the nation’s currency system and improve public confidence.
The rollout of newly designed currency notes is widely seen as a positive step toward improving the integrity of Pakistan’s monetary system and strengthening protections against counterfeit currency. Officials have emphasised that all existing denominations will remain in use once the new designs are introduced.
