Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history, sealing the 2026 drivers’ title with a third-place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday at just 20 years and 68 days old. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the race ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, while the Italian did exactly what he needed with a podium finish.
Antonelli arrived in Mexico needing only to finish ninth to clinch the crown, whatever his rivals did. He started fourth, managed his Soft tyres for more than 40 laps and was running third when a big crash for Valtteri Bottas’s Cadillac brought out the red flag and wiped out his tyre advantage. He restarted fourth, then passed Charles Leclerc into Turn 1 two laps later and drove a controlled race to the flag for his 17th podium of the season.

From Tough Debut to World Champion
Antonelli was handed a Mercedes race seat for 2025 as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement, straight out of junior racing. His debut season had difficult spells, and team boss Toto Wolff admitted some people questioned whether he was ready. In 2026 he turned that around, becoming the youngest pole-sitter in F1 history in China early in the season and building a lead his rivals could not catch.
In the team’s statement, Antonelli said he was still trying to process the moment and thanked Mercedes and his family for believing in him. Wolff called the achievement “extraordinary,” saying the champion’s journey mattered more to him than the record itself. Hamilton and Verstappen lifted the new champion onto their shoulders after the race.
