The benchmark KSE-100 index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) rose 1,305.39 points, or 0.78%, to 167,869.45 in early trading on Tuesday, November 3, as fresh buying came in during the opening minutes of the session.
The index had closed at 166,564.07 on Monday, up a modest 154.81 points (0.09%), after a session in which refinery shares came under selling pressure and a late recovery lifted the market into the green.

Sectors Leading the KSE-100 Rally
Buying was broad-based. Automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, oil marketing companies and power generation stocks all traded higher in the first hour.
Index-heavy names including ARL, HUBCO, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, PSO, SSGC, HBL, MCB, MEBL and NBP were in the green, giving the benchmark most of its early lift.
Why the Market Moved
On Monday, refinery stocks were sold after the government absorbed higher petrol import costs through a cut in the petroleum levy, a step that changes the margin outlook for the oil chain. Global markets were mixed as investors waited for the outcome of the US midterm elections, which are being held on Tuesday.
The market is also still adjusting to tighter money. The State Bank of Pakistan raised its policy rate to 12% in late October to fight rising inflation, which makes bank deposits and government papers more attractive compared with shares. Tuesday’s buying suggests investors are again picking up stocks they see as cheap after recent swings.
How the KSE-100 Rally Affects You
A rise in the KSE-100 lifts the value of shares held directly by small investors, but also of equity mutual funds, voluntary pension funds and insurance-linked savings plans that invest in listed companies. Many of these funds hold the same large bank, oil and power shares that led Tuesday’s gains.
Early gains, however, do not always hold until the close. Monday showed how quickly sentiment can turn within one session, so investors usually wait for the closing figure before reading too much into an opening jump.
What Is the KSE-100 Index?
The KSE-100 is Pakistan’s main stock market benchmark. It tracks 100 listed companies chosen mainly by market capitalisation, with the largest company from each sector included so that every part of the economy is represented. The index was launched in November 1991 with a base value of 1,000 points.
Because banks, oil and gas, fertiliser, cement and power companies carry the most weight, moves in a handful of large shares such as OGDC, PPL, MARI, HBL and MCB can shift the whole index by hundreds of points.
KSE-100 Outlook: What to Watch Next
- Closing level: whether Tuesday’s early gain survives profit-taking later in the day.
- US election result: foreign investors and global markets will react to the balance of power in the US Congress.
- Oil prices and petroleum levy: changes affect refineries, oil marketing companies and the government’s revenue plans.
- Interest rates: any signal from the State Bank on its next policy move.
