Australia’s left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann faces a significant career challenge after being reported for a suspect bowling action following his impressive performances in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka. The 27-year-old, who claimed 16 wickets in two matches in Galle, will now undergo independent testing at an ICC-accredited center, likely in Brisbane.

Under ICC regulations, bowlers are allowed a maximum of 15 degrees of flex in their arm action. If testing confirms that Kuhnemann’s action exceeds this limit, he will face a ban from bowling until he undergoes remedial work and gains clearance. However, he remains eligible to play domestic cricket while the review process is ongoing.
This is the first time Kuhnemann’s action has raised suspicion since making his professional debut in 2017. Over the past eight years, he has played five Test matches, four ODIs, and 55 Big Bash League (BBL) games without any concerns previously raised about his action. Kuhnemann played a pivotal role in Australia’s dominant 2-0 series sweep over Sri Lanka, forming a lethal spin partnership with Nathan Lyon. The duo accounted for 30 of the 40 wickets taken by Australia in the series, using the abrasive surface to their advantage.
Despite the setback, Kuhnemann’s participation in the series itself was remarkable, given that he was racing against time to recover from a broken thumb suffered during the BBL in mid-January. With 25 wickets in just five Test matches at an average of 22.20, Kuhnemann has been one of Australia’s standout performers in recent times. However, his immediate future now depends on the outcome of the ICC’s independent testing.
For now, Australia will await the results, hoping that Kuhnemann is cleared to continue building on his promising career without disruption.
