Official Position on Munich Trip

📍 Canada’s government had initially announced that Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend the Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany, from Feb 11–15, 2026, to strengthen defence partnerships and boost diplomatic engagement at the high‑level security summit.

This announcement by the Prime Minister’s Office outlined Canada’s intention to engage global leaders on defence readiness, energy security, critical technology cooperation and other strategic topics.

Tragedy in Canada — Tumbler Ridge School Shooting

However, a devastating mass shooting occurred in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, where at least eight to ten people were killed, including the suspected shooter, and dozens injured in one of Canada’s deadliest school attacks in history.

In response to the tragedy, Carney’s office announced that he is “devastated” by the events and will suspend or delay his planned travel, including the Munich trip, to remain in Canada and focus on the crisis.

What This Means

So, while Ottawa initially confirmed Carney’s attendance at the security conference, the prime minister’s travel has now been put on hold due to the shooting’s aftermath. Carney has expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and emphasized national mourning and support.
