Cherat Cement Powers Up 6MW Solar Plant in KP, Expands Renewable Energy Footprint

Date:

Cherat Cement Company Limited (PSX: CHCC) has successfully commissioned a 6.065MW solar power plant at its manufacturing facility in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking a significant step forward in its renewable energy journey. The company shared the development in its latest notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday.

With this milestone, CHCC’s total solar power project now stands at approximately 9MW, with the remaining 2.935MW expected to be energized within the current financial year. The company noted that this expansion would add to its captive power generation capacity, reducing reliance on the national grid and contributing to cost efficiencies.

The move comes amid a nationwide push towards renewable energy, particularly solar, as Pakistan witnesses a surge in the adoption of alternative energy sources across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. The trend aligns with the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting renewable energy, reaffirmed recently by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who stated that solar energy remains a top national priority.

Cherat Cement joins a growing list of listed companies shifting towards solar energy. Recent months have seen similar announcements from companies like Tariq Corporation Limited, which is setting up a 200KW solar power system, and Olympia Mills Limited, planning a 500KW off-grid solar solution.

Pakistan’s total installed solar capacity has grown exponentially from 321MW in 2021 to 4,124MW by December 2024, according to figures presented to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). As energy consumption patterns evolve, such initiatives by industry leaders like Cherat Cement underscore the private sector’s critical role in accelerating the country’s renewable energy transition.
