PCB Under Fire for Raiding Sports Development Budget
PCB Under Fire for Raiding Sports Development Budget

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finds itself in hot water after reports surfaced that prize money for the winning Champions Trophy team in 2017 was drawn from the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) budget meant for Olympic sports development. This revelation contradicts PCB’s repeated claims of financial independence and sparks outrage among officials and athletes of other sports.

The hefty Rs. 205 million prize money, originally allocated for Olympic hopefuls, was diverted from PSB’s limited resources at a time when Pakistan was set to participate in the 12th South Asian Games in Nepal. This move has been termed “unjust” and detrimental to the growth of non-cricket sports in the country.

Officials point out the contradiction between PCB’s assertions of self-sufficiency and its reliance on government coffers for rewarding cricketers. They question why PCB, with its supposedly substantial revenue generation, couldn’t cover the prize money itself instead of dipping into the PSB kitty meant for broader sports development.

Adding fuel to the fire is the hefty Rs. 680 million special grant recently received by PSB. Experts argue that this amount should have been entirely directed towards Olympic sports, further highlighting the questionable allocation of the Champions Trophy prize money.

Documents submitted to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) confirm the suspicious withdrawal from PSB funds. This revelation has reignited concerns about past instances of PCB tapping into government resources, leaving Olympic sports underfunded and struggling.

The controversy exposes a potential mismanagement of funds within the sports ecosystem of Pakistan. The reliance on government funds for cricket, while neglecting other sports, raises questions about priorities and equitable distribution of resources. As calls for accountability grow louder, PCB faces the pressure to address its financial practices and ensure transparency in future dealings.
