Trophy Hunting Revenues Boost GB Communities Amid Record Auction

Date:

Hunters from around the world poured millions into Gilgit-Baltistan’s trophy hunting program this week, with the highest bid of $370,000 secured for an Astore markhor.

The auction, held in Gilgit, marked a sharp rise in permit prices after base rates were increased this season. Permits were also issued for blue sheep and Himalayan ibexes, fetching between $10,000 and $37,550 for exportable trophies, while local hunters secured ibex permits for Rs750,000.

In a rare move, three markhor permits for Diamer district were auctioned on an alternative basis, after the Chief Minister intervened to overcome security objections that blocked permits in past years.

Officials said the program is designed to incentivize wildlife protection. “Eighty percent of the earnings are returned to local conservancies, which ensures communities remain invested in conservation,” said Wildlife Conservator Khadim Abbas.

Last year, more than Rs2.42 billion was distributed among communities, with the government receiving Rs607 million.

Officials and conservationists celebrated the record-breaking auction as a testament to the program’s success. The Gilgit-Baltistan Wildlife and Parks Department has been credited with not only generating significant revenue but also with the revival of endangered species populations, such as the Astore markhor, which was once on the brink of extinction.

While the increased prices drew concern from some local outfitters who fear it could deter international hunters, the program’s supporters emphasize that the substantial funds channeled back into local communities provide a powerful incentive for conservation and a sustainable model for wildlife management.
