Democrats Win Control of US House and Senate in Sweeping Midterm Victory

Date:

The US midterm results have handed Democrats control of both chambers of Congress, after the party won the House of Representatives and the Senate in elections held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The outcome is widely seen in Washington as a rebuke of President Donald Trump, who will now face a Democratic Congress for the final two years of his term.

Major US networks projected the House for Democrats shortly before 10 pm Eastern Time, and the Senate was called a little after 11:30 pm, when projections showed the party had secured at least 51 seats. Democrats needed a net gain of three House seats and four Senate seats to take control.

US Midterm Results: Key Senate Seats That Flipped

Democrats flipped Republican-held Senate seats in several traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio and South Carolina, as well as North Carolina and Maine.

State Result
North Carolina Democrat Roy Cooper defeated Michael Whatley, the party’s first flip of the night
Maine Democrat Troy Jackson defeated Republican incumbent Susan Collins
Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown won a comeback bid, flipping the seat
Texas Democrat James Talarico won the seat against Republican Ken Paxton
Iowa, Kansas, South Carolina Seats flipped from Republicans to Democrats
Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff re-elected

Some close races were still undecided when the majority was called, and states such as Alaska use ranked-choice counting, which can take longer.

How the Balance of Power Changed

All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats were on the ballot, along with 36 governor races. More than 57 million Americans had voted early before polling day.

Chamber Before the election After the election
Senate Republicans 53, Democrats 47 Democratic majority (at least 51 seats)
House Republicans 218, Democrats 214 Democratic majority

Capturing both chambers in a single midterm is rare. It is only the fifth time since the Second World War that a party has flipped both the House and the Senate in a midterm election.

How Trump and Democrats Reacted

President Trump congratulated Democrats on their wins but said he does not see the results as a rejection of his leadership. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who is in line to become majority leader, told supporters the party had won the Senate against the odds. Voter anger over high prices and the war with Iran was a major factor, with Democrats gaining ground even in states that have long voted Republican.

What US Midterm Results Mean for Trump’s Last Two Years

When the new Congress takes office in January 2027, Democrats will control committees, investigations and spending bills in both chambers. The Senate also confirms cabinet members, judges and ambassadors, so Trump’s nominees will now need Democratic support. However, Trump keeps his veto power, and overriding a veto requires a two-thirds vote in both chambers, which Democrats do not have. Analysts expect more gridlock in Washington.

Markets reacted nervously. US stock futures fell as the results came in, even though Wall Street has often welcomed divided government in the past.

How US Midterm Results Affect Pakistan

  • Iran war and diplomacy: Pakistan has been involved in mediation between Iran and the United States. A Democratic Congress has funding and oversight powers that could give lawmakers a bigger say in how the conflict is handled.
  • Oil prices: Any change in the outlook for the war affects global crude prices, which feed directly into fuel prices in Pakistan, a major oil importer.
  • Aid, trade and markets: Congress approves foreign aid budgets and trade laws, and shifts in global investor mood can also be felt in emerging markets, including the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

The US midterm results set up a divided government for the rest of Trump’s term, and the coming weeks will show how both sides plan to work, or clash, with each other.
