The provincial government’s rapid strides in enhancing road safety, including the issuance of a remarkable 74,000 driving licenses in a single day, have been accompanied by another significant development— a substantial increase in license fees.

In an unexpected move, the Lahore Traffic Police recently disclosed that the caretaker Punjab government has given the green light to a substantial hike in driving license fees for both cars and motorcycles.
As per an official announcement on X, the fee is set to skyrocket by a staggering 1566%, surging from Rs. 60 to Rs. 1000. This controversial decision has triggered a wave of criticism on social media platforms, with many citizens expressing dissatisfaction. They argue that the timing of the increase appears incongruous, especially when more motorists are seen adhering to traffic regulations.
Netizens are particularly concerned that such a steep fee surge might discourage responsible driving practices and unfairly burden law-abiding citizens who actively contribute to road safety.
Adding to the discontent, the traffic police clarified that citizens have until December 31 to obtain their licenses at the existing rate. However, starting January 1, 2024, motorists will be obligated to pay the escalated fee of Rs. 1000.
Furthermore, the city traffic police have recently increased fines for learner’s permit holders, imposing a Rs. 2000 penalty. While the police have assured that they won’t register cases against learners, the hefty fine raises eyebrows and further intensifies public discontent.
As citizens grapple with the approaching deadline, the prevailing sentiment on social media is one of frustration and disappointment, questioning the rationale behind such a dramatic increase in driving license fees.
