A significant flood threat is looming over Punjab as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued high-level warnings for the River Chenab and River Tawi. This alert comes amid a notable increase in water levels, raising concerns about potential flooding in several downstream areas.

According to officials, the rising water in the River Chenab could lead to a major flood event, particularly at the Marala headworks. This situation directly threatens low-lying areas and communities in the districts of Gujrat and Sialkot. The increased risk is not confined to the main rivers alone; tributaries and seasonal streams that feed into the Chenab and Tawi are also at risk of overflowing. This could compound the flood impact and affect a wider geographical area.
In response to the escalating situation, Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has directed district administrations across the potentially affected regions to move to a state of high alert. All relevant government departments have been mobilized to ensure a coordinated and effective response. Key departments, including agriculture, irrigation, health, livestock, and transport, have been specifically instructed to activate their emergency preparedness plans. These plans include measures for swift evacuation, provision of relief goods, and ensuring the safety of both human and animal life.
The PDMA has underscored the critical importance of taking preventive action to mitigate the potential for large-scale damage. This proactive stance is essential to save lives and protect property. Local communities residing near the vulnerable riverbanks have been strongly urged to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with local authorities. Residents are advised to monitor official updates closely and be prepared to comply with any evacuation orders issued by the administration. The PDMA’s warnings aim to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to minimize the devastating impact of a potential flood.
